Secret Agent Gadgets and other objects

This page gives details of various gadgets and other items used or seen during the three series.

Dictaphone

Dictaphone

Colin gets given the dictaphone by Ma Mossop in series one. He uses this to record his "secret agent" notes but also uses it to record other conversations such as recording Smith talking in series one, on playback of these conversations Colin and Franny realise the Professor is the same man as the milkman and the American. Franny also uses Colin's dictaphone to record messages when she solves one of the clues that opens the pad-locked box. At the end of series one we find out that Ma Mossop has been listening in on conversations in the shop as there was a transmitter in the dictaphone.

Colin would continue to use a dictaphone in series two and his brother Jace would use it in series three.

The Ancient Blue beads

The Ancient Blue beads

These blue beads first appear in series one, there is one hidden in Ma Massop's shop under the false panel in the painted white table. This is found by Smith when he robs the shop but Anwar stops him with the other blue bead. The beads have magical powers to grant men the power to do their bidding. Anwar uses the blue bead to control Smith and Hellman at the end of series one.

Anwar brings the blue bead back at the end of series two to use against Hellman, using it's mysterious powers to make Hellman relive being back in the tomb.

Ma Mossop's portrait

Ma Mossop's portrait

There is a portrait of Ma Mossop in the back room of the shop in series one. In the portrait Ma Mossop is standing in from of a table and she is wearing the cross of Lorraine on her jacket lapel. This offers the clue that the table in the background of the portrait is the same table in the shop but the table has since been painted white. Hiding behind the portrait Franny and Colin finds a package of photographs, a newspaper article and an old piece of paper with "PAINtED WHItE" typed on it.

The "Painted White" table

The table in the back shop in series one is the same table as seen in Ma Mossop's portrait but it has since been painted white. The "PAINtED WHItE" clue found in the package behind Ma Mossop's portrait helps Colin and Franny work out that it is the same table. The table drawer has a false bottom concealing one of the blue beads.

The Dragon's head

Dragon's head

This is where Colin and Franny hide the padlocked box that they found earlier. They later find that the Dragon's head has been smashed and broken by someone trying to find the box.

The Egyptian cat statue

Appearances: series 1, 2 & 3


The Egyptian cat statue

The cat statue features prominently in the title sequence in series one and two but only features in Smith's hallucinations when Anwar uses the blue bead to control him at the end of series one. The eyes of the cat statue glow a bright blue like the blue beads.

The cat statue appears in series two in the Wooden Kamel. The cat statue has a hidden compartment underneath where Hellman has hidden Colin's bag.

The "Chewing Gum" Radio Transmitter

The "Chewing Gum" Radio Transmitter

The Radio Transmitter disguised as a packet of chewing gum is given to Colin by Nyegel in episode 5 of series two. Nyegel tells Colin that it has a self destruct button.

Pepsi phone

Appearances: series 2 & 3


Pepsi phone

The "Pepsi" phone appears in series two and three and is often being held in the hand of the spaceman suit. It is in the shape of a Pepsi can and folds out to show the numbered buttons, it also has an extendable aerial to improve the signal. In series three it is used by Hellman, Robert and Eleanor.

Spacesuit

Spacesuit

The spacesuit is seen in the Wooden Kamel from the start of series two and is often holding the "Pepsi" phone in one of it's gloves. The spacesuit begins to move at the end of episode three, in episode four Colin finds that Nyegel has been inside the spacesuit since it was delivered to the shop which Nyegel mentions was in the early morning.

The Door locking Clock

The Door locking Clock

The doors of the Wooden Kamel are locked and unlocked by the hands of the clock in the back room of the shop, when the hands of the clock are moved it triggers a mechanism that will lock and unlock the doors. The front door of the Wooden Kamel opens on the wrong side where the hinges are visible. The mechanism of the unlocking is shown in full in episode seven of series two. The clock is still in active use in the shop during series three.

The train set

The train set

The train set is found on the table in the front shop of the Wooden Kamel in series two and also features in a flashback in series three. When the train starts moving around the tracks it opens the Mummy Sarcophagus which leads to the passageways to get to the attic room upstairs in the Wooden Kamel where the Policeman stays in series two.

The Mummy Sarcophagus

The Mummy Sarcophagus

The Mummy Sarcophagus is only seen in hallucinations during series one, when Franny is trying to solve the puzzle of the lock, when Colin is trapped in the cellar outside and when Smith is under the influence of the blue bead's magic.

The Mummy Sarcophagus is found in the front room of the Wooden Kamel in series two and also features in a flashback in series three. The Mummy Sarcophagus is the secret entrance to the passageways that lead to the attic room upstairs.

The "Jim Glue Super Spy" book

The "Jim Glue Super Spy" book

Colin's book that he has in series two called "Jim Glue Super Spy" is a book he has borrowed from the library. During series two he hides the map and photograph inside the book and hides it underneath the table in the back room of the shop. When Colin and Franny go to retrive the book they find out that it's a different table and the book is no longer where they left it, Umma claims to have thrown the old table in a skip down the road. Umma later reveals to Colin that she returned his library book.

The Queen's Beast

Appearances: series 3


One of the Queen's Beast statues was stolen from Hampton Court Palace, this is shown during the title sequence for series three. Legend has it that whoever it the rightful owner of England's throne will be able to remove the stone crown from one of the beasts under certain conditions. Eleanor Plantagenet believes she is the rightful heir to the throne so, alongside Robert, plans to seize the throne from the Queen. They hide the stolen Queen's Beast in the Wooden Kamel which begins the story for series three with Hellman trying to get the children's attention from inside of the shop. Colin is particularly affected by the mysterious powers of The Queen's Beast statue causing various hallucinations.
